The Eerste Divisie has been the second highest division in Dutch football since it was founded in 1956. From the 2006/07 season it was called the Jupiler League, named after its former main sponsor, the Jupiler Brewery. Since the 2018/19 season, it has been called Keuken Kampioen Divisie, also named after its main sponsor, Keuken Kampioen, a kitchen manufacturer.
General information
The Dutch First Division consists of 20 teams in the 2018/19 season, three of which are the second teams of the honorary divisionaries AFC Ajax, PSV and AZ Alkmaar. The clubs play against each other twice during one season. The first leg takes place in the autumn season and the return leg after the winter break in the spring season.
Promotion and relegation
At the end of the season, the champion is automatically promoted to Eredivisie. Eight other teams fight with the 16th and 17th of the Eredivisie in 3 relegation rounds for the promotion. The game is played according to the international rules in the first and second leg as well as the away goals rule. The clubs in places 6 to 9 are qualified for the first round, those in places 2 to 5 as well as the 16th and 17th of the Eredivisie for the second round.
Until the 2004/05 season, 2 groups with 4 teams each were played. Each group consisted of one Eredivisie club and 3 Eredivisie clubs. The group winners will play in the Eredivisie the following season.
Between the 1971/72 season and the 2008/09 season there was no sporting relegation from this league. Clubs from the Hoofd class, at that time the third highest league (amateur league), could be admitted to the Eerste Divisie upon application and after fulfilling the license conditions.
A sporting relegation has been possible since the 2009/10 season. As a first step, two teams should be relegated to the top class, which will be created in the 2010/11 season. After HFC Haarlem had been abandoned, only one more club (FC Oss) had to enter the lower league. After all, from the 2010/11 season onwards, the last placed club will be relegated, unless both finalists from the top class, who are playing for the promotion spot, do without promotion.
Since the 2013/14 season, reserve teams from the Eredivisie team have also been allowed to compete in the second Dutch league. Jong Ajax, Jong PSV and Jong AZ Alkmaar make use of this right.
