Leumit League is the second category of professional football in Israel below the Ligat ha’Al and above the Aleph League.
History
The Leumit League came into force at the start of the 1954-55 season, replacing the Alef League to be the new first division of Israeli football. However, it lost that status in 2000, when it was replaced by the Ligat ha’Al. Since then it is the second division in Israel’s football league system, above the Aleph League.
Structure
There are 16 clubs in the Leumit League. Each team plays thirty-three rounds determined by the Israel Football Association and is awarded three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. In the past, at the end of each season the last two teams in the standings were relegated and replaced by two teams who were relegated from the Ligat ha’Al (except in 1998, when the Ligat ha’Al was about to be reduced to 12 teams). In that year, only one team was promoted. In the same way the eight worst teams of that season were relegated to the Artzit League).
The final position in the league is determined first by the points scored, then by the goal difference and then, if necessary, a comparison between the results of two or more teams in the ranking using the three criteria and, finally, a series of one or more tie-breaking matches.
