La Liga Bet is the fourth division of the Israeli football championship. Established in 1951, it constituted the second division of the national championship for the seasons 1951-1952 and 1953-1954. From 1974, with the establishment of the Liga Artzit, the Liga Bet became the third division.
In 1999, the IFA introduced the Ligat ha’Al which new first division. This resulted in the downgrading of all existing series: as a result, the Liga Bet became the fifth series.
In 2009, with the suppression of Liga Artzit, Liga Bet became the fourth division again.
Formula
- The 64 teams of the Liga Bet are divided into four groups, two relating to the northern part (North Group A and North Group B) and the other to the southern part (South Group A and South Group B) of the country.
- In each round, the clubs all face each other in double round-trip challenges, for a total of 30 days. The winners are promoted in Liga Alef.
- The last two classified in each round are, instead, relegated to Liga Gimel.
