The Hong Kong First Division League is a semi-professional and at the same time the second highest football league of the city of Hong Kong. Until the introduction of the Hong Kong Premier League in 2014, it was the highest league. It is an independent league and has no connection with the Chinese Super League or Jia League. Responsible for the league is the Hong Kong Football Association. The league has been played since 1908, and a total of 29 clubs have won the trophy since 1908. The record champion is the South China AA with 41 titles so far. For the second time, the reigning champion is the HKFC.

Format

The league is played with 14 teams, in the first and second round, with all teams competing against each other. The champion and the winner of the Hong Kong Senior Challenge Shield, the oldest cup competition in Hong Kong, qualify directly for the AFC Cup. The last two in the table will be relegated to the 2nd league.

The clubs do not have their own stadiums, so that the public stadiums are used for the league operation. If two clubs use the same stadium as their home venue, the revenue from the entry fees will be shared at the meeting.

For each season, the association decides anew how many foreigners may be registered per team. Currently this is nine players per team. Players from China are also considered foreign players.
