The Gibraltar Premier Division (in English and officially the Gibraltar Premier Division) is a semi-professional football league and the highest category of the Gibraltar football league system.
The predecessor competition to this tournament was the Merchants Cup, established in 1895. From 1907 the tournament is organised by the Gibraltar Football Association. Initially it consisted of eight clubs, but the number grew over the years until 1909 when it was divided into two categories, creating the Second Division. In the 2016-17 season the First Division was played between ten clubs.
The teams of this division participated in the extinct Cup of the First Division and, together with those of the Second Division, participate in the Rock Cup (cup). In addition, the champion participates in the Pepe Reyes Cup (supercup), together with the Rock Cup champion. From the 2013-14 season, teams can qualify for international tournaments organised by UEFA.
History
Football in Gibraltar dates back to 1892, when British military personnel settled in the territory began to play their first matches under a group called Prince of Wales Football Club. By 1895 the number of clubs had grown to such an extent that the Gibraltar Civilian Football Association was created and a tournament – predecessor of the current one – the Merchants Cup,2 in the first edition of which 8 clubs took part and Gibraltar Football Club became champion.
The Exiles Cable Club, team formed by English from Vigo, champion in the seasons 1899-1900 and 1901-1902.
It received the denomination of Merchants Cup for the donation of the trophy by the Association of Merchants of Gibraltar. At first it was established that it could only be played by local civilian clubs – therefore British – and that were affiliated to the association.4 The first final, as it was played under direct elimination system, played between Gibraltar Football Club and Jubile Football Club, was witnessed by 1 500 spectators.4 The condition marked “civilian” was a consequence of the military character of many English football clubs at the time, in the Iberian Peninsula, who imported this sport from the British Isles. The factor was especially relevant then because there was no field for civil use and, between the course of one championship and another, each year the different clubs played matches against other teams of sailors. It was in 1902 when one of the four fields suitable for the practice was declared for civil use, so the clubs formed could play outside the official period of the tournament in the North Front.
This was the first Gibraltarian tournament until 1907 when the de facto Gibraltar Foot-Ball League was established under the approval of The Football Association,5 and affiliated in 1909. The establishment of his own league allowed him to be considered for UEFA membership, a fact that was not produced by Spain’s refusal, in conflict with the United Kingdom over Gibraltar’s sovereignty; which came up with the regulation that the European entity would not accept any territory not accepted by the UN as independent.5 The conflict was not resolved until 2006, and finally in 2013 the Gibraltar Football Association was admitted as a full member.
Since the formation of the championship it has been played almost uninterruptedly, except on rare occasions, and is considered one of the oldest football tournaments, taking into account the aforementioned Merchants Cup.25 Due to its rapid settlement and the formation of new clubs, in 1909 it was divided into two categories, the First and Second Division, while the original Merchants Cup became the territory’s cup competition, renamed Rock Cup in 1936 despite this, its first editions are considered part of the league.

Due to restrictions and its amateur character the league has sometimes been marked in stages by the supremacy of some clubs. At the beginning of the 20th century, Prince of Wales F.C. was the dominant team. Between the 1960s and 1970s, Glacis United Football Club managed to win ten titles in eleven seasons. At the beginning of the 21st century, the Lincoln Red Imps Football Club managed to win fifteen titles from the 2000-01 season to the 2015-16 season (with the exception of 2001-02). Europa Football Club won the 2016-17 season, winning its seventh title and the first since 1952 (after 65 years).
Competition system
The tournament was played under the all-against-all system in two rounds until the 2013-14 season. From the 2014-15 season until now have been played in three rounds. That is to say, each of the ten participating teams will play 27 matches (21 when played with 8 teams); three times the total number of participants minus one [(number of participants – 1) x 3].
At the end of the season, the first classified is proclaimed champion, and manages (from the 2013-14 season) to qualify for the Champions League. The runner-up on the other hand manages to qualify for the European League (from the 2016-17 season).
On the other hand, the last classified is relegated to the Second Division. The penultimate one qualifies to play the match of promotion and relegation against the second division runner-up; the winner of this match will play in First Division the following season while the loser will play in Second Division.
From the 2016-17 season, the “national player rule” -Home Ground Player in English or HGP for its initials- was introduced, which establishes that each team must have at least three players of Gibraltarian nationality (according to FIFA) in the summons of each day, of which one must remain on the field during the whole match; that is to say, at no time may a team play with eleven foreign players, except if it has already made the three changes and the only Gibraltarian player on the field suffers an injury that prevents him from continuing playing. In this circumstance the team will face what remains of the match with ten foreign players. Players under the age of sixteen are also not allowed.
Classification to international tournaments
Since the 2013-14 season, after the GFA joined UEFA, the champion of the tournament gets a quota to participate in the Champions League and the runner-up in the Europa.n League. 2 From the 2016-17 season, the league received the addition of a second quota to the European League.
Lincoln Red Imps was the first Gibraltarian team to participate in the Champions League and is currently the one that has participated on the most occasions, in seasons 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17, in all of them starting from the first previous round, surpassing it in seasons 2015-16 and 2016-17. Europe became the second team to participate in the tournament when it made its debut in the 2017-18 season.
Europe was the first Gibraltarian team to participate in the European League and is currently the team that has participated the most in the 2014-15,n seasons. 4 2015-16, 2016-17; in all of them starting from the first previous round; surpassing it in the 2016-17 season. Lincoln Red Imps and St. Joseph’s became the second and third teams to participate in the tournament when they made their debut in the 2017-18 season.
