The Mittelrheinliga (until 2008 Verbandsliga Mittelrhein) is the highest league of the Mittelrhein Football Association. It thus forms the level of the upper league, currently the fifth highest class in the German league system.
History
The league was first founded in 1956 as the Verbandsliga Mittelrhein and initially consisted of 15 clubs. It replaced the two-track Landesliga as the highest amateur league in the association’s territory and was the third highest league in the German league system until 1978. Usually the champion of the Verbandsliga Mittelrhein took part together with the champions of the Verbandsliga Niederrhein and the two relay winners of the Verbandsliga Westfalen first in the promotion round to the 2nd Oberliga West, then from 1964 in the promotion round to the Regionalliga West and finally from 1975 in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga Nord. In 1978 the Amateur-Oberliga Nordrhein was founded as the new third highest league, composed of the best teams of the Verbandsliga Mittelrhein and the Verbandsliga Niederrhein.
The Verbandsliga Mittelrhein was thus only the fourth highest league. In return, however, the promotion round was cancelled and the Mittelrhein champions automatically qualified for the upper league. After the introduction of the regional league in 1994, the Verbandsliga Mittelrhein was only the fifth highest class. After the introduction of the 3rd league and simultaneous renaming to its current name Mittelrheinliga in 2008, it was the sixth highest league. With the elimination of the NRW league from the 2012/13 season, however, the Mittelrheinliga is once again in fifth class and also has the status of an upper league for the first time in its history.
