The Football League Two (further designations: League Two (short form) or Sky Bet League 2 (official sponsor name)) is the fourth highest division in English football after the Premier League, the Football League Championship and the Football League One. Within the English Football League (EFL) it is the third highest division. Unlike most other countries, this league is still a professional league.

In the Football League Two, 24 teams play in a single round with outward and return legs. Each victory is rewarded with three points and each draw with one point. At the end of a season, the top three clubs in the final table are promoted directly to the Football League One. In addition, a fourth promoted club will be determined who has completed the season between the fourth and seventh positions and wins two play-off rounds. In the play-offs, the fourth team plays against the seventh and the fifth against the sixth-placed, with the weaker team having home rights in the first game.

The two winners will then play out the fourth promoted team, which will be determined in a final match in London-Wembley. The four promoted players will be replaced by the four relegated Football League One players who have taken the last four places in their league’s final table. Similarly, the last two Football League Two teams will be relegated to the underlying Conference National and will be replaced by the first-placed team plus the clubs’ play-off winners between second and fifth place in that league. The relegated teams officially lose their status as professional teams, as the Football League Two is the lowest professional league.

The position within the league is determined according to the following criteria: points scored, goal difference, goals scored, mini table of two or more teams taking into account the above criteria, play-off match(s).

The Football League Two was introduced at the beginning of the 2004/05 season and replaced the Third Division, which was the fourth highest league in England between 1992 and 2004.
