The Czech Football League, called Fortuna league for sponsorship reasons, is the professional league and first division football clubs in the Czech Republic. It is the top competition of the Czech football league system and is played by 16 clubs, which operates a system of promotions and relegations with the Druhá league. The season starts in August and lasts until May of the following year, with teams playing 30 games each. The champions qualify for the UEFA Champions League and the last two finishers are relegated to the second division.

Commercially the league has adopted the names Gambrinus League from 1993 to 2014,1 Synot league in seasons 2014-15 and 2015-16 by sponsoring Synot beer, ePojisteni.cz league in season 2016-17, HET league in 2017.18 and Fortuna League in 2018-19.

The league is currently ranked 14th in Europe in the UEFA ranking.

History

The Czech League has been played since 1993, after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, and is the natural successor to the Czechoslovak First Division. Sparta Prague are the most successful team in the history of the Czech League with twelve titles to their credit, followed by Viktoria Plzeň with four, Slavia Prague and Slovan Liberec with three and Baník Ostrava with one.

Format

Currently the system of competition is a league format, with 16 teams, which face each other, at double instance. Once the championship is over, the first team to qualify (the champion team) wins a place in the UEFA Champions League, as does the second team to qualify for the third qualifying round. Third and fourth place are in the UEFA Europa League.
