The Cyprus First Division, called CYTA Championship for sponsorship reasons, is the highest category of Cyprus football, has been played since 1934 and is organised by the Cyprus Football Association.

History

After the Second World War came the Greek Civil War, which caused a great deal of fanaticism among the Greeks. Since most of the island are Greek Cypriots, they had a great influence on society, also including sport. In 1948, some clubs participated in politics and criticized the left as responsible for the war. Several players from the clubs criticized his club, which resulted in the expulsion of players from their teams. The players in turn created new clubs with their own association and their own football competitions. Until 1953 there were two different football championships in Cyprus and their respective associations. However, in 1953, the two Cyprus football associations were unified, and the teams that were established in 1948 under the independent association were allowed to become members of the Committee on Freedom of Association. Only AC Omonia was accepted into the First Division. And due to the addition of more clubs that season, the relegation and promotion that began in Cypriot football.

The unified Cypriot championship lasted only two seasons. In 1955, Çetinkaya Türk SK, who had been the only Turkish Cypriot team to play in the Cyprus division for the first time since 1934-35, withdrew from the championship and with other Turkish Cypriot teams formed the Football Federation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, with their own competitions. The fundamental reason was political, because the Turkish Cypriot leadership supported the partition of the island. However, this Federation has never been recognised and no team from the federation can play in international competitions.

The competition

The championship dates back to 1934 and the first champion was Trast AC, but it has been official since 1937, with 14 teams playing against each other, once in their stadium and once in the opponent’s stadium. Since 1962, UEFA has allowed Cypriot clubs to participate in international competitions. APOEL FC and AC Omonia are the clubs that have won the league the most times in history.

After playing a regular season of 26 dates together, the second phase of the championship is played, consisting of two groups of six teams: from the first to the sixth team play for the title (the one with the most points at the end of the ten dates, added to the regular phase score, is crowned champion); and from the seventh to the twelfth team ranked, for relegation, where the last of this group is downgraded along with the last two teams in the overall standings (13th and 14th).

The league champions qualify for the second preliminary round of the UEFA Champions League, while the second and third play the first preliminary round of the UEFA European League. The cup winners qualify for the second preliminary round of the same European competition.
