Bulgarian National Team
In July 2004, Christo Stoitschkow succeeded Plamen Markow, who resigned after the European Football Championship in 2004, as coach of the Bulgarian national football team. The team has participated twice in the European Championships (1996 and 2004) and seven times in the World Championships. The first international match was played by Bulgaria against Austria on 21 May 1924 in Vienna, where they lost 6-0.
Bulgaria’s participation in the European Football Championship
At the 10th European Football Championship in England in 1996, Bulgaria participated for the first time in a final round. For the European Football Championship 2004 in Portugal the national team could qualify again under the coach Plamen Markow. In both tournaments the Bulgarians were already eliminated in the preliminary round.
Bulgaria’s participation in the Football World Cup
In 1962, a Bulgarian selection qualified for the World Cup for the first time: In the qualification, France were defeated 1-0 after a decisive match. In the finals in Chile, Bulgaria lost 0-1 to Argentina before losing 6-1 to Hungary. The last group match against England ended with a goalless draw.
In 1966 in England, Bulgaria again managed to beat Belgium in a play-off, but the team were again unable to make it past the preliminary round. All three games were lost (0:2 against Portugal, 0:3 against Brazil and 1:3 against Hungary). Georgi Asparukhov scored the Bulgarians’ only goal.
Four years later in Mexico, they were on the brink of their first win in a finals match, taking a 2-0 lead against Peru in the 50th minute. But the Peruvians fought back and defeated the Bulgarians 3-2. After a 2-5 defeat by the German side, Bulgaria had retired prematurely, with a disappointing 1-1 defeat by Morocco.
At the fourth final round in 1974 in the Federal Republic of Germany, Bulgaria could once again not survive the preliminary round, but the Bulgarians managed with two points from three games the best performance so far in a final round. After that, they could not qualify for 12 years.
At the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico they qualified for the round of sixteen for the first time, but lost 2-0 against the host nation.
In 1994 in the USA, the Bulgarians finished their negative series of 16 World Cup games without a win with a 4-0 win over Greece. In the round of sixteen, Mexico were eliminated after penalty kicks, in the quarter-finals titleholders Germany were eliminated (2-1). In the end the Bulgarians reached fourth place. Christo Stoitschkow became top scorer with 6 goals.
In 1998, Bulgaria could no longer match the performances of four years earlier. From three games only one point was scored, the last group match against Spain even ended in a 1:6 debacle. Bulgaria failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup in South Korea/Japan, 2006 in Germany and 2010 in South Africa.
