The Pro B French Basketball Championship is the second largest professional basketball division in France. This championship is the antechamber of the Pro A. Since 1987, it has been under the aegis of the National Basketball League.

Eighteen clubs are participating in the competition. At the end of the regular season, the team ranked first is crowned French champion and becomes a Pro A player. Teams ranked from 2 to 9 compete for play-offs to reach the top division. Clubs ranked 17th and 18th at the end of the regular season are downgraded to National 1.

Since the 2014-2015 season, the 18 teams have been competing in the Pro B Leaders Cup. This competition is initially held in the form of geographical pools. At the end of the first phase, the 8 best teams compete in the final phase. The winner of the competition, whose final is played as the curtain-raiser of the Pro A Leaders Cup final, is directly qualified for the playoffs that take place at the end of the regular season.

2016-2017 Pro B

The 2016-2017 Pro B season is the seventy-eighth edition of the second highest level of the French basketball championship, the thirty-first under the name “Pro B”. The best teams in the division advance to the Pro A the following season.

Formula

Eighteen professional clubs compete in the regular season, which runs from October 13, 2016 to May 19, 2017. Each team plays thirty-four games, seventeen at home and seventeen away, two against each opponent in the division. At the end of the season, the first in the ranking is directly promoted to Pro A for the 2017-2018 season and is crowned Pro B French Champion. Teams ranked 17th and 18th are relegated to NM1. They are replaced by the two promoted clubs in the same division, provided that they comply with the rules of financial management controls and the specifications imposed on Pro B clubs. In the event of defection of clubs promoted from NM1 to these conditions, the 17th or even the 18th of Pro B may be rescued.

Teams ranked 2nd to 8th in the regular season qualify for the playoffs and compete in a tournament held in May and June 2017, after the regular season. The quarter-finals are between the second of the regular season and the winner of the Pro B Leaders Cup or the ninth (in the event that the winner of the Pro B Leaders Cup finishes the regular season in the top eight or is relegated to NM1), the third to the eighth, the fourth to the seventh and the fifth to the sixth, and are played in the best of the three sets, as are the semi-finals and the final. The winning team of the final reaches the Pro A.

Since the 2014-2015 season, the 18 teams have been competing in the Pro B Leaders Cup. This competition is initially held in the form of geographical pools (6 geographical pools with 3 teams). At the end of the first phase, the 8 best teams compete in the final phase (the first in each group and the best second) are qualified for the Quarter-finals. The Final will take place on February 19, 2017 at Disneyland Paris as the curtain rises on the final of the Pro A Leaders Cup.

The winner will be offered a direct qualification for the Accession Playoffs:

  • if the winning club is ranked from 1 to 8 at the end of the regular season, the 9th ranked club will participate in the Accession Playoffs
  • if the winning club is ranked from 9 to 16, it will do the accession Playoffs with clubs ranked from 2 to 8
  • if the winning club is ranked 17 or 18 at the end of the regular season and relegable to NM1, it will not participate in the Accession Playoffs and will be replaced by the 9th in the regular season.
