Korisliiga is the highest division in men’s club basketball in Finland. In the past, the league was also known as a sponsor’s league, and in the meantime it was also known as the Sparliiga. After the first Finnish championship in 1939, a round tournament between eight teams was held the following year to determine the champion, which can be described as the birth of the Finnish league. The league currently consists of twelve teams that determine the Finnish champions and whose best teams qualify for European club competitions. The record champion is Pantterit from Helsinki with 14 title wins, the Nilan Bisons from Loimaa became champions for the first time in 2012. In the past, the fact that Dennis Rodman 2005 and Scottie Pippen 2008, two former NBA All-Stars and NBA champions, played individual matches in Torpan Pojat’s jersey in the Korisliiga, caused a sensation.
Mode
The teams play a double round in the Round Robin tournament, so that with a current total of twelve teams, each club has played 44 matches in the regular season. The championship title will then be played out in play-offs between the eight best placed teams. The play-off series will be played in “Best-of-Five” mode over all rounds in 2012.
International competitions
Finnish teams have not yet won any European club titles. In the European Cup of National Champions, in which only the national champion qualified alongside the defending champion, the respective Finnish champion regularly reached the second round of the best twelve teams in the 1980s, but never qualified for the final round of the best six teams.
The Finnish league is not a member of ULEB, which is why Finnish teams have not taken part in the club competitions at European level, which have been important since 2001. In the recent past, Finnish teams have only competed in FIBA Europe competitions. Due to Finland’s tight schedule, however, only a few teams took part. Before 2012, only Lappeenrannan NMKY was represented and reached the semi-finals in the FIBA EuroCup Challenge 2006. After this competition was stopped a year later, the club took part in the FIBA EuroCup 2007/08, where it reached the main round of the 16 best teams. Only in 2012 two Finnish teams took part in the EuroChallenge. While Tampereen Pyrintö was eliminated in the preliminary round of the EuroChallenge 2012/13, Kataja Basket Club immediately reached the quarter-final play-offs in which they lost to BCM Gravelines.
