The Basketball Bundesliga (Austria) is the highest basketball league in Austria. The league was originally run by the Austrian Basketball Association, since 1998 the league has existed as a separate club. Until the 2004/05 season it was called the A-League, and until the 2008/09 season it was called the Austrian Basketball Bundesliga (ÖBL). Since the 2008/09 season, the name of the league sponsor has been included in the league name, and since then the main sponsor Admiral Sportwetten has been part of the name Admiral Basketball Bundesliga (ABL). Since 2004 Spalding is sponsor of the ABL. Sponsor of the playoffs since 2011 Snickers, the partnership with the ABL was extended until the season 2017/18.

Game mode

Nine teams participate in the Austrian Basketball Bundesliga. There are 32 rounds in the basic round. The first six teams of the basic round qualify for the play-off. The quarter-finals will be played after the best-of-three, the semifinals after the best-of-five and the finals after the best-of-seven mode to determine the champion. In the 2016/17 season, nine teams will play for the Austrian Basketball Championship title.

According to the ÖBL betting rules, the winner of the final series is the champion (= M), the loser the runner-up (= VM). The ranking of the other teams results from the placements after the main rounds H1 and H2.

Former Bundesliga teams

In recent years, several teams have had to stop playing in the Bundesliga due to financial difficulties in spite of their sporting qualifications. The VIVA 49ers Basket was not granted a license for the 2007/08 season. The kelag Wörthersee Piraten have withdrawn their nomination for the 2011/2012 season.

MVP awards

At the end of the season, the MVP awards are currently presented in four categories. The most successful players in recent years have been De’Teri Mayes, who won five MVP season awards, and Bob Gonnen, who was voted coach of the season four times.
