Nippon Professional Baseball, abbreviated to NPB, is the main interclub baseball competition in Japan featuring twelve professional teams divided into two leagues: the Central League and the Pacific League. Each team plays 144 regular season games. The final, the Japan Series, is held in October and awards the national title. It pits the champions of the two leagues against each other until 2003, then the playoffs also involving the second and third seed of each league that have been in place since 2004. The NPB was created in 1950 from the ruins of the Japanese Baseball League, which operated between 1937 and 1949. The defending NPB champions are Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters, winners of the 2016 Japan Series.
