The “National Football League” currently unites a total of 32 American Football teams in the USA in one league. Founded in the 1920s as the American Professional Football Association, the US Professional League is now one of the world’s most respected sports leagues with its final game, the Superbowl.
The popularity of American football has not only increased in Europe, where it has won more and more fans over the past 20 years, but also in the motherland itself, where it has had to struggle with teething problems. For a long time, American football only attracted attention in the USA as college football, and it was only in the 1960s that the recognition of American football as a professional sport grew in the USA. Television played a major role in this, bringing millions of Americans football into their living rooms. In addition to the “American Professional Football Association”, which had meanwhile been renamed the “National Football League” (NFL), another league soon formed with the “American Football League” (AFL) due to the great success of the sport.
In 1967 the winners of the NFL competed against the winners of the AFL in the so-called “AFL-NFL World Championship Game” for the first time. It was not until 1969, a year before the two leagues merged to form today’s famous NFL, that the term “Super Bowl” was coined for the final. The first two championship games in 1967 and 1968 were subsequently called Superbowl I and Superbowl II.
Today, the NFL League is divided into two so-called “Conferences”, to which the 32 American Football teams are equally divided. Both the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC) consist of four divisions, analogous to the four cardinal points. Four teams are assigned to each division, so that a conference consists of a total of 16 teams.
NFL Season
A season within the NFL can be considered divided into three parts. The highlight of each season is the Superbowl.
In the pre-season, each NFL team plays four games, the so-called “Exhibition Games”, over a period of five weeks (August to September). Any victories or defeats do not play a role for the high season, the games are mainly used for training and integration of new players. At the same time, long-serving players, or those on whom a lot is set in the new season, are only used sporadically in order not to expose them to the risk of injury. Due to the season, the Exhibition Games are often played late in the evening, especially in the southern states of the USA.
The main season (Regular Season) starts at the beginning of September and lasts a total of 17 weeks, with each NFL team playing 16 games. The week without matches is called “Bye Week”, during which the players can relax.
During the high season most NFL games take place Sunday afternoon or evening (Sunday Night Football) or Monday evening (Monday Night Football). Previously only occasional matches were played on Thursdays, in the 2012 season there was one match every Thursday evening (Thursday Night Football).
The main season ends with the so-called playoffs, from which the two teams facing each other in the Super Bowl emerge.
The six best teams from the two Conferences AFC and NFC qualify for the playoffs. These six teams are on the one hand the four division winners of a conference, on the other hand those two teams are ranked fifth and sixth, which have the best win-loss ratio in their conference and can therefore also participate in the playoffs. These are the so-called “Wild Card” teams.
It often happens that teams within a conference end the high season with the same ratio of wins and losses. In order to decide which of these teams can compete in the playoffs, so-called “Tie Breaking Rules” are used.
Every game within the playoffs works according to the so-called “knock-out” system, i.e. every loser of a match is immediately eliminated from the playoffs.
Within a conference, the six selected teams are divided into two rounds. In the first round, the so-called “Wild-Card Playoffs”, the third and fourth best division winners will meet the two Wild-Card teams. The division winners in the first and second places are automatically placed in the second round and compete against the respective winners from the first round. The second round is also called “Divisional Playoffs”. The two winners of the Divisional Playoffs then face each other in the so-called “Conference Championship” of the AFC or the NFC. The winners of the AFC and NFC are also the two teams who meet each other in the last decisive game, the Super Bowl.
